Christmas this year was different but pleasant. This year I feel like Christmas wasn't about the present. It wasn't about the commercials, and it wasn't about the results. Christmas this year was about the learning experience. I've come to realize that what we should appreciate the things we have and always aim to be better, but never the best.
In retrospect we are always aiming for the top; aiming to be better than the person next to us. So how can one define being the best if we we're all shooting for it. A bar is set and I guess we are all trying to reach it. How we reach that bar might be the bigger issue. It's all about the journey and really what you learn on the way up to the top. If on the road to the top you seem to pull down those around you, you really didn't learn much. Capitalism in essence inspires us all to live for ourselves but as humans we embrace socialism and the idea that we should care about the well being of our fellow man and be willing to sacrifice ourselves for the well being of others. But does that make sense?
Why should I sacrifice myself for someone else's well being? What do I gain from this act? What's to say that my efforts will really make a difference? It really comes down to the individual and what they believe is right. We are naturally greedy because it is our human nature. However we are able to reason which allows us to make such decisions and provide a sincere act of altruism. Altruism is really the essence of the Christmas season.
We give gifts, wish well on others, and spread the cheer not because we expect something in return but because we feel it is the right thing to do. We do it as an act of altruism and only wish to see the happiness that such an act can bring to a friend, a neighbor, or even an acquaintance. This Christmas I was able to grasp that idea and have learned to accept what I am able to do and what I have potential of doing. That at the end of the day it isn't about reaching the top of the ladder but carving your name on the steps to the top. The impact will be seen through the feedback friends, families, and partners are able to give even if it's just be a few words.
Sincerely, Hector Guzman
