So on March 28, the world had its first global election. Your ballot was your light switch and the cause was fighting global warming by turning down the lights for one hour. The results were amazing as countless cities and homes submerged into darkness and gave our planet a nice time out. The idea behind such an initiative is remarkable and the turnout was even better.
When I first heard about the idea, I was skeptical. Having no power for a whole hour just didn't seem physically possible in my mind when you consider hospital, schools, and other institutions that literally use electricity as a life line. I'm glad to say however that many cities: San Francisco, Atlanta, Sydney and even Hong Kong went into darkness and show their support for a such a great movement.
Check out this video to see how successful Earth hour was!
Earth hour reminded me of how individuals can change the world when they come together. The idea of people coming together, collaborating, sharing and participating in a movement that transcends space and time reminds me of an old cartoon I remember from when I was little.
It was an episode of Hey Arnold. In the episode, Arnold and his friend Gerald are excited about having the chance to see Sally's comet. The issue is they live in New York City: the city that never sleeps. It's up to Arnold and Gerald to submerge the city into darkness so that they can see the comet pass.
Like Earth hour, Arnold and Gerald voiced their issue and told families, friends, and neighbors how it would be a once in a lifetime event. At first they faced many brick walls. It wasn't until the end that they were able to get their message across under the alias of a famous radio broadcaster. The results were extravagant as the city went black and Sally's comet was as clear as day.
I'm sure this won't be the first time we see such movements and I hope to see many other movements like these that encourage environmental awareness and the little things we can do to fight climate change. Like Arnold and Gerald, I believe that we all have a voice that when executed properly can reshape our way of life.
Sincerely, Hector Guzman
