Progress Report for April

Official Start Time: 4:45 a.m.
Date: 4/30/09
Official End Time: 5:00 a.m.

So its that time of the month again and I'm not really sure how to start it off. I mean I could reflect about the latest blogs and randomness that goes into the crazy/moral stories I try to tell but really it all comes down to what will I do next.

And the answer is . . . . inconclusive

For now, I'm not sure what lays ahead in my digital career. I know I have a bunch of test to prepare for in my non-digital world and that will probably eat away at the time we have together. I realized that I am a huge procrastinator. I get distracted easily and forget that this blog needs updating. Additionally, in desperate time, desperate measures are taken. I've realized that doing a blog a day doesn't guarantee better quality blogs, instead it includes random flip flop that is shocking to read later. I will admit its worked once, but i don't know about twice.

In the end, I've come to the conclusion that only with practice can I make perfect. Things I want to improve on is bringing more real life quality to the blog: content, pictures, events, etc. Additionally, I want the blog to represent a more professional side of my expertise. I mean its great to joke around and laugh at stupid things that go on in my life, but sometimes it nice to see the more professional blogs and how they actually inform and serve, rather than entertain.

I guess for now, I'll keep you posted.

Sincerely, Hector Guzman

The Things I Love

Official Start Time: 3:30 a.m.
Date: 4/29/09
Official End Time: 4:00 a.m.

These are things that make life worth living. These are the things that remind me to get up every morning and continue pushing against the rain and the wind.

1. Education (btw, they are listed in no particular order)
I've always been a big nerd at heart and education is one of those things that forces me to get up everyday. In my experience, I've realized that with a proper education, man is able to accomplish the impossible; he is able to travel to China, make money, and dream. Education for me represents opportunity. Reading, writing, and challenging yourself mentally are things that I plan to do for years to come and possibly till the day I die. Not because I am forced, but because I love education and the idea of teaching or learning something new everyday.

2. Books
I've always been an avid reader and from an early age, my love for books grew and establish the vocabulary that I use so well today. For me, reading was a great way to see the time fly by. I grew up under a controlling mother who always reminded us that education came first. She always told us to read and prepare for the future. That if we wanted to live a good life in the future, we needed to work hard now and grasp all the information we could.

I actually remember one day during the summer when my mom actually gave us a test. If that's not bizarre enough for you, then I don't know what is. In retrospect, reading was justing something I took upon myself to exceed in. It started with one book, then two books, then a whole series of books, and so forth. Something I regret is not reading more books for information, but in my opinion I believe education and the knowledge we are equipped with the day we enter grade school has little correlation to our future success.

3. The Future
The future, and the idea that there is always more to come, is another thing that reminds how sweet life can be. For me, the future represents endless possibilities: it can never be predicted or controlled. Not knowing what's about to happen next is always a bumper for me, but in many ways a good thing. There is no way I could have imagined being where I am today if I looked by 5 years ago. Right now I'm at the prime of my life; every decision I make from this point forward will determine where I will be in the future to come and what I can expect in the next couple of years. Whatever it is, I just hope for the best.

4. Family and Friends
This topic kinda falls in sync with the other one so I'm not gonna get to touchy about it. Family and friends are the esscense point to any life. Human interaction alone is probably the most exciting part of a person day and makes the life of that person even more special, knowing that their are people out there who care and worry about you the same way you worry about them.

Touching the lives of others is probably the biggest reward any can receive on this Earth. Knowing that you're actions have moved, motivated, encouraged, facilitated, and even pushed the dreams and ambitions of another person is more gratifying than any trophy or cash price can suffice. I'm altruistic guy, what can I say.

5. Jassica
And last but definitely not least is Jassica; she makes me life worth living. I first met Jassica in early november of 2008 and since then we've been inseparable. She's pretty crazy. She forces me to do things I wouldn't otherwise do and cares about me in the most peculiar of ways. In every essence of the word, she completes me.

We share so much in common. We both love school, books, and wonder about the future. We both dream of the impossible and are crazy in our own ways. We make each other smile. We make each other laugh. And we both know, that as long as there is the other one in this world, that there is still a reason to live. I love you Jassica.

Sincerely, Hector Guzman

The Things I Hate

Official Start Time: 1:00 a.m.
Date: 4/28/09
Official End TIme: 1:30 a.m.

So, I guess it would only be practical to explain why I hate these things.

Like most hated items, there origin dates back to our childhood. For me, ceramics were a big thing in my childhood. My mom had one to many of them. Our entire living room was covered in them and it drove me mad. Reason being, they inhibited my childhood experience. These little porcelain dolls and dollar store goodies kept me from running free in my house and always served as a reminder of my mothers authority.

If anything every happened to them, I knew it would be my head. The biggest things that bothered me about them was that they served no purpose; they just stood there. Stood in the way of my cries for freedom and everything else that kids should be aloud to do.

Dirty clothes are no better in this pile of hate. For me dirty clothes have always disgusted me; they represent misery and poverty. I'm a pretty optimistic person, but dirty clothes just way me down. They prove that no matter how high you rise, you will always have a dirty trail following you behind.

Furthermore, dirty clothes have always represented an obstacle for me. I always felt bad wearing dirty clothes and worried others would make fun of me because of it. In retrospect, your clothes should define who you are nor should they be a factor that decides what kind of person you are. I guess it's just one of those things.

Finally, telenovelas (or soperas) are is the last things I can't stand. I understand that they're based on a novel written by some brilliant author but really the story gets old. Each televnovela has the same hero, damsel in distress, bad guy/girl, and setting that makes no sense. How are viewers post to connect with millionaire damsels in distress who can't get over a man who could care less if they were dead or alive. Probably the must frustrating thing is how they drag out the story. They take something as simple as a person being hit by a car that would typically take 2 episodes to talk about and turn into 6. Why? I don't know.

The list believe or not ends here. I'm really not that picky of a guy. I've learned to live through tough times and tough experiences. I'm pretty solid, like a rock. Just those things, oh, how they wither my away at my soul.

Sincerely, Hector Guzman

Owning A Piano

Official Start Time: 9:30 p.m.
Date: 4/18/09
Official End Time: 10:00 p.m.

Owning A Piano

Probably one of the more extreme dreams, but dreams are suppose to be crazy; they should demand every bit of our ambition. So owning a piano would be pretty sweet. I noticed over the last couple of blogs that my future is starting to represent the show Frasier (even more so with some other stuff that I'm gonna mention) I once knew how to play the piano. I took an electronic keyboarding class through most of middle school and had a pretty good knack at learning the sheets of music. I will admit that I got frustrated easily and sometimes I thought I really sucked. *kids can be so mean*

However, I was good enough to perform a duet with my friend in the 8th grade. Hearing the echo of this grand piano proved to me that I needed to own a piano in the future. It sounded awesome and it looked so cool; even though it's kinda huge. Learning how to play it again might be another story, but for now I can dream.

Badminton

Official Start Time: 9:00 p.m.
Date: 4/17/09
Official End Time: 9:30 p.m.

Badminton

For the longest time, badminton has been a big part in my life. I first started playing when I was elementary school. My sister played it in school and bought a set for us to have at home. We would play for hours and it was great. I remember how great it felt seeing it fly up in the air and then seeing it being flung back at you. The hours we spent playing badminton is probably why the game is so special to me. It resembles a unifying force between people that would otherwise not come in contact in such a way.

In the future, I hope to keep badminton and make it a major part in the life of my kids. Badminton was probably the only sport I actually played and probably the only sport me and my brother could play well. In the future, I'd like to have a badminton court in my yard to remember the good old days and the memories my kids will create through badminton.

Home Library

Official Start Time: 8:30 p.m.
Date: 4/16/09
Official End Time: 9:00 p.m.

The Idea of a Home Library

The idea came to me after after one Saturday night when I was talking to my brother, thinking about the future, and things we would want in it. Now, to get something straight, we've been blessed. Me, my brother, and my two sisters were born to two loving parents who nurtured and encouraged us to be the best we can be. These values are something I hope to one day teach to my children as they venture into the world and establish their legacy.

However, we are human, and greed is a part of us; a home library is just part of my greedy side. Of course I would need my own house first, but the library comes with it; no matter where I go. It would be filled with books from the floor to the ceiling on all sort of issues: science, history, politics, philosophy, mathematics, everything. It would be in an excluded part of the house; away from all the noise and traffic that inhibits one's ability to think. The word, biblioteca, would be posted above the entrance. Arm chairs, books, and peace would set the ambiance. It sounds too good to be true right?

The books would be organized according to the Dewey Decimal System (for a complete list, click here)

000-099Computer Science, Information, and General Works
100-199Philosophy & Psychology
200-299Religion
300-399Social Sciences
400-499Language
500-599Science
600-699Technology
700-799Art & Recreation
800-899Literature
900-999History, Geography and Biography
This idea doesn't seem impossible, but a bit of a challenge when it comes to collecting all the books and moving them back and forth as time goes by. However, it would be pretty sweet. Hopefully my wife has no issues with the idea. *gulp*

In the future . . .

Official Start Time: 8:00 p.m.
Date: 4/15/09
Official End Time: 8:30 p.m.

Building tomorrow, today!

The future that lays ahead is a mysterious place filled with opportunity and uncertainty. Many fear the end of the world in the year 2012 while others worry about getting that last dollar home. I for one have decided to be oblivious to the truth; to lay back and worry about today and what I can do now to promise myself a better tomorrow. In no way do I plan to make it rich nor do I plan to make it into the history books. I plan to live life the way God designed it; free of the inhibitions and doubts that prevent us from doing the things that make us happy.

In the following blogs, I'm going to share as simply as possible the things that I hope to accomplish before I wave farewell. The things I know will soothe my soul at the end of the day and grant me an unspoken level of happiness.

So, the creative spark is finally starting to ware off and descend back into the creative bowls of my mind. In the process, I've realized that there's a difference between being direct in your writing when trying to establish a point and being a douchebag. I realized that what I said was a bit douchy, but necessary.

In the 21st century, education should be treated with the utmost importance. Developing countries all over the world have realized that education is the key to success. That man has come to a point in his life where he is no longer struggling to survive as a hunter and gather but excelling as he redefines himself and the world around him.

"Sometimes tradition kills progress."

I've come to realize that the change will probably not come around in my lifetime. However, it would be nice to see the first stones being set. Establishing the foundation for educational reform would be a nice lifetime goal and something I could see doing, but I know its gonna take a while. Damn immediate satisfaction.

For now, I'll just train. Runners run, swimmers swim, and I'll need to read, write, and expose myself to the works and fields that lay ahead; like all athletes do. Wish me luck.

Sincerely, Hector Guzman

Why Education Should Be Free

Official Start Time: 1:45 a.m.
Date: 4/13/09
Official End Time: 2:00 a.m.

10 Reasons Why Education Should Be Free
  • A proper education is absolutely necessary in the 21st century

  • Students shouldn't be forced to limit their learning experience according to their financial capabilities

  • Higher level education is practically required for future success

  • It is key to have strong leaders for a brighter tomorrow

  • This can be only be done through a good education system

  • Charging for education only limits a generation's potential

  • Life is only going to continue getting harder

  • Putting a value on education wouldn't make the situation any better

  • Instead, it pushes for reform in the wrong direction

  • Education in the 21st century should be known for innovation and creativity; money shouldn't be an issue

Considering All Factors In Education

Official Start Time: 1:00 a.m.
Date: 4/12/09
Official End Time: 1:30 a.m.

Oh to often, education in the 21st century is often stigmatized by the presentisitic view that many use to label a generation of learners who where born into a world that wasn't read to handle the technology it was presented with. Several men and women have tried to crack down on the major issues in education but fail to make one major connection: how does money affect an individuals education in the 21st century?

Of the documentaries I have seen about education in the 21st century, I've noticed that the best students are also the richest students. Not just that, but documentaries in this field almost never address the educational experience of middle class to lower class students. I'm talking about the everyday student whose parents work hard to make sure their kid has best education money can provide. Students in this financial part of the totem pole make up a large percentage of the students in today's education system and should be given the same regard as students from the higher levels of society who "worry" about the future just as much as we do.

In my experience, students who come from a blessed background tend to do better in school. What is just said is very vague and can reinterpreted whatever way you please. When one considers the potential of a student whose parents went to college and a student whose parents didn't go to college, it's fair to say that the student whose parents went to college have a better chance of going to college and pushing their family onto bigger and better things. A big reason for the success of such students is the financial support they can count on. Many students in the 21st century don't have the financial suppported needed for higher education and therefore are limited to their educational experience as a lack of funding and support makes going onto bigger and better things even harder.

It makes me sick to stomach when I see students will all the potential in the world being forced to drop out of college or not go at all because they didn't have the money. Education should be a priority in today's world and shouldn't be labeled with dollar signs and coins. However, the 3E's of Tomorrow continue to strip many students from a complete education as today's leaders place a value on the future of our country. It just sucks when students are seen as numbers rather than humans.

So to wrap it up, education shouldn't have a value. We shouldn't place a value on our children's future and we shouldn't sacrifice their future for our own personal gain. Education in the 21st century should mark the birth of innovation and creativity, and not the introduction of capitalistic ideals in an "ad free" environement.

Funding In Education

Official End Time: 1:00 a.m.
Date: 4/11/09
Official End Time: 1:30 a.m.

The introduction of technology to the everyday classroom brought with it more than flashy computer screens and projectors; it also brought a hefty bill with it too. The cost of introducing technology and the training behind its implementation leaves many schools behind technologically. Funding for such programs doesn't come easily when you consider the issues the world faces economically, environmentally, and in terms of efficiency. Even though funding may seem trivial, it is a big reason why many schools fail to meet the expectations of No Child Left Behind and similar government programs.

The issues with funding in education dates back to a time before computers and before cellphones. Before technology, there were textbooks. Textbooks continue to play a vital role in education but since the introduction of technology, textbooks have literally doubled in price. The reason: textbooks fell in demand due to the connectivity that technology introduced. Because of the connectivity technology brought to education, textbooks and additional resources have doubled in price and made funding even harder for many school systems. Government programs such as No Child Left Behind have made it harder for struggling schools to meet their expectations by cutting the funding many schools need to just meet proficiency. In what way does that make any sense?

The logic behind ideas like No Child Left Behind is that by exposing schools that are having issues meeting proficiency, we are providing our students with a healthier, more responsible education system that pushes the best and brightest forward. These views make sense when you consider them in a perfect world where every child comes from a stable home that has the financial resources necessary to attend a 4 year private college. However, we do not live in a perfect world. Many of the school systems that fail to meet proficiency lack the funding and resources necessary for a proper education. Many of the students come from rural backgrounds that place them at a disadvantage when you compare the educational background their educational foundation is based on.

The presentic, in many ways ignorant, view that is used to evaluate education in the 21st century makes meeting proficiency even harder when funding isn't provided. Programs like No Child Left Behind want all schools to excel and yet they rip the legs out from the underneath the future of our student's education by taking away the funding that could be used to help our students achieve. Efficiency is one thing, but putting a price on a child's future is another. Funding shall forever inhibit us from competing in a global economy as efficiency pushes struggling schools even further down the totem pole.

Sincerely, Hector Guzman

Introducing Technology to the Everyday Classroom

Official Start Time: 8:00 p.m.
Date: 4/10/09
Official End Time: 8:30 p.m.

The introduction of technology to the everyday classroom marked the birth of a new generation of learners who were "blessed" with being born in a world not ready for them. Prior to the 21st century, education was pretty predictable. You started kindergarten at age 5 and by the time you were 17, you were off to college and ready for the real world. This was during a simpler time where teachers could use books and chalk to prepare their students for a world that had never heard of the Internet and the demons that awaited them.

Technology however rewrote the books and put educators in a awkward spot as no longer were books and standardized testing enough to prepare students for life in a global society. Technology opened a new can of worms for educators to deal with as the Internet brought people from all over the world together and with it the competition and greed that consumes man's every whim.

The introduction of technology to the everyday classroom started way before Window's 95 and the birth of innovation. Technology first made its way into the classroom with the introduction of television in education and how it redefined teaching. Educational programing took visual learners to new frontiers as science, technology, engineering, and math leapt off the 2-d pages they were printed on, and onto projectors and television screens that redefined how students learned. In many ways, television, or the "idiot box" as it was often referred to, marked the general decline of learning as students were exposed to a new frontier that had no water or life support to guide it. They were literally pioneers in age of experimentation.

From here technology continued to push its way into our children's education through compact disk and computer screens that would feed vicious learners with information that lacked guidance and structure. It wasn't technologies fault that education took a turn for the worst; it was man's fault. Similar to the cultural withdrawal of the Middle Ages, technology exposed man to an avenue of instant information that could be saved, copied, and shared with an online community that had no idea how they would organize this new median. Things have gotten better but man's greed and false ambitions still inhibit education's potential and the future that lays ahead.

Sincerely, Hector Guzman

A New Can of Worms

Official Start Time: 8:00 p.m.
Date: 4/9/09
Official End Time: 8:30 p.m.

The idea of a global society and the disasters that await opens a new can of worms as the 3E's of Tomorrow: Efficiency, Environment, and Economy push education over the edge as it becomes a competition where every nation fights to be the next super power. Much like propaganda during the Cold War, the idea of competing at a global level introduced fear and paranoia to educators around the world who realize that like a strong army, a nation must also have a strong education system; one that produces scholars and powerful leaders for the future that lays ahead. Fabricated learners in every essence of the word.

The idea of creating fabricated learners isn't too far off. Technology pushes man forward towards efficiency and education is no exception. With each step, technology brings educators closer to creating smarter and faster students who use the skills they've learned in school to tackle the impending threats that lay ahead. The time and money that goes into education gives even further reason for creating fabricated learners. Times are tough and education isn't the only one on the hit or miss list. All these factors create propaganda and induce paranoia to parents and leaders who strife to be the best they can.

In many ways the attempts are futile as education is pushed off a cliff along with the ethics and morals that once resembled its foundation. The can of worms that paranoia and propaganda have introduced to education in the 21st century have left little chance for tomorrow leaders who will face the impending threats that lay ahead.

Sincerely, Hector Guzman

A Brief Overview of Education in the 21st Century

Official Start Time: 7:00 p.m.
Date: 4/8/09
Official End Time: 7:30 p.m.

Before I start, I liked to clarify that this information is primarily based off my experience as a student who has seen both sides of the education system and presents a weighted description of what he beliefs are the changes that lay ahead.

As of now, education in the 21st century focuses primarily around the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). These STEM fields are at the nations highest level of importance as the doors to a global community have finally hit educators in the head and awaken a beast that feeds off the paranoia and propaganda that the connectivity of the 21st century has made possible. Students in the 21st century are no different than students in the 20th or 19th century. The presentistic view that has changed their reflection has forced educators to push towards educational reform but at a cost that neither parent or child would be wiling to pay.

Technology in every essence of the word is meant to push the human race forward. In education, technology is used to expand the understanding of students to fields that previous generations could not understand. The controversy behinds such ideals lies between the efficiency and gain in such methods. Rote learning for instance has been a popular form of teaching as students review, analyze and prepare for test day with no room for experimenting in between. Experimenting in the past was a risk for many educators who lived during a time of modernization and social change in which the future was unclear and it was better to be "safe than sorry." Today, experimenting is slowly making its way into the everyday classroom as students participate in courses and projects that serve primarily as electives: even though many of these fields are revolutionizing the world around us.

The price however is too much to pay for many conservatives who fear that the reforms would mean the end of a generation of consumers who never heard of email or used a computer to take notes in class. The fear in many ways protect students and parents from total anarchy from philanthropist and mad men who would flip tables over in search of the perfect education system. This system would produce top quality learners and workers who after graduation could be launched into the world and serve their duty as doctors, lawyers, aid workers, and service men who lack the motivation and purpose that comes with hitting the brick wall in today's education system. It is therefore an inconclusive battle that embodies the frustration many educators face when selling a product that has no cash flow, but only merits to fly on.

The Creative Spark Strikes Again!

Official Start Time: 7:00 p.m.
Date: 4/7/09
Official End Time: 7:30 p.m.

We've talked about the environment and the initiatives being made towards a greener tomorrow but now we will take a spin in the opposite direction: we're going to talk about education.

Now, education in the 21st century has been discussed in the passed but I believe there are new issues to consider that like the environment or the economy will open up a new can of worms to be dissected.

As a student, and a bit of a nerd, I can admit that education is a passion of mine. I go to school because I like school. I think about science, technology, engineering and math the same way I read a book: analyzing the rhetoric that go into making such models. Additionally, I see education and life the same way I see language: it is a transcending figure that goes beyond space, time, tests, and life. It consumes who we are and defines the reality that we often take for granted.

Now before I spill all the beans, I liked to declare the switch and invite you to read along and share your beliefs and expertise.

The Power Of Earth Hour

Official Start Time: 10:30 p.m.
Date: 4/5/09
Official End Time: 11:00 p.m.

So on March 28, the world had its first global election. Your ballot was your light switch and the cause was fighting global warming by turning down the lights for one hour. The results were amazing as countless cities and homes submerged into darkness and gave our planet a nice time out. The idea behind such an initiative is remarkable and the turnout was even better.

When I first heard about the idea, I was skeptical. Having no power for a whole hour just didn't seem physically possible in my mind when you consider hospital, schools, and other institutions that literally use electricity as a life line. I'm glad to say however that many cities: San Francisco, Atlanta, Sydney and even Hong Kong went into darkness and show their support for a such a great movement.

Check out this video to see how successful Earth hour was!

Earth hour reminded me of how individuals can change the world when they come together. The idea of people coming together, collaborating, sharing and participating in a movement that transcends space and time reminds me of an old cartoon I remember from when I was little.

It was an episode of Hey Arnold. In the episode, Arnold and his friend Gerald are excited about having the chance to see Sally's comet. The issue is they live in New York City: the city that never sleeps. It's up to Arnold and Gerald to submerge the city into darkness so that they can see the comet pass.

Like Earth hour, Arnold and Gerald voiced their issue and told families, friends, and neighbors how it would be a once in a lifetime event. At first they faced many brick walls. It wasn't until the end that they were able to get their message across under the alias of a famous radio broadcaster. The results were extravagant as the city went black and Sally's comet was as clear as day.

I'm sure this won't be the first time we see such movements and I hope to see many other movements like these that encourage environmental awareness and the little things we can do to fight climate change. Like Arnold and Gerald, I believe that we all have a voice that when executed properly can reshape our way of life.
