Progress Report for March

Official Start Time: 4:00 a.m.
Date: 3/31/09
Official End Time: 4:30 a.m.

It's the end of the month and it's seem like it's the end of alot of things. I'll try to keep it simple but words make it hard to express the mixed feelings I have when it comes to the site and the future that lays ahead.

#1. YOU'LL NEVER KNOW WHAT'S COMING NEXT
I've said it in the past and I'll say it again, you'll never know what lays ahead in the future to come.
  • What you're doing today might not be what you're doing a year from now.
  • The experience you gain from these projects are the greatest gifts you can ever get.
  • Being open minded and patient will be the greatest virtues you will ever gain through these experiences; cherish them.
#2. BEING DEVIOUS NEVER WORKS
Something that I've learned through this experience is that being devious never works.
  • You can never force anyone to do anything they don't want to do.
  • Making friends for no obliterate reason doesn't help
  • Selling your soul to the devil happens more than once when you're desperate; try not to make a fool of yourself.
#3. SEEING THE BIG PICTURE ISN'T EASY
It's hard to accept the truth and a lot of times it means seeing the big picture
  • Sometimes, it might be wise to admit when things aren't working out
  • It's better to be honest to yourself instead of lying to those around you
  • Being earnest is the real road to success; once you find it you're destined for greatness
FINAL SUMMATION

So, my goal for March 31. 2008 was to have 1,000 members on the Ningxia Dragon Student Ambassador website; I got 672. It was a valiant effort but I kind of saw the mountain I was climbing against and knew from the beginning that gaining 373 members was basically impossible. I never really gave up but I will admit that after a while I stopped giving it my all. I started to see the bigger picture and realized that reaching that goal shouldn't be my goal. My goal should be to provide a better service to the members that are already here and not worry about all the ones that aren't here.

The future that lays ahead is bright with opportunity and I hope to take every chance I have to take advantage of these opportunities and give back so that others can have the same chance I did. I have therefore decided to start my own social network: Curriculum Designers, Inc. In no way do I plan to leave the site or betray everything it has taught me. I just simply want a bigger breeding ground where I can publish a lot of the things I have learned. Wish me luck ;)

May the Ningxia Dragon Student Ambassador website prosper and grow; fulfilling the dreams and aspirations of its teams, members, and guardians who wish to provide opportunities for students everywhere in a time that needs shelter and care.

Sincerely, Hector Guzman

A Break From The Brain Crack

Official Start Time: 3:30 a.m.
Date: 3/30/09
Official End Time: 4:00 a.m.

I thought it might be wise to limit the amount of brain crack I leak because 1, it started to hurt and 2 because I wanted to review some of the ideas I talked about and why.

So, I hope my descriptions made some sense because I really don't think they did. They are brain crack, but I wish they had more substance and structure so that people/me wouldn't keep asking questions like what about this or would this make sense if you consider this or this or this.

Some of the ideas I shared really were sweet and I hope that at some point in my lifetime, we can see them happen. The idea of free media wherever you go under a CC license was probably the best and one of my more mature ideas. I realized that the brain crack can be really random and fun in a lot of ways. However, only those ideas that actually go through are worth anything which is a bummer. Sharing the ideas does supply a certain level of satisfaction knowing that your idea has been archived for you and others to look at and reflect upon in the future.

Overall, braincrack isn't just inventions but also reforms that make life harder, better, faster, and stronger. I'm sure this won't be the first time I share such ideas/beliefs and I know things can only get better from here. Brain Crack Forever!

Sincerely, Hector Guzman

Brain Crack #4 ~ Media Wherever You Go

Official Start Time: 3:00 a.m.
Date: 3/29/09
Official End Time: 3:30 a.m.

It always kills me when I can't find the right image, song, or video when I'm doing a blog, a project, etc etc. In my pits of frustration I often find myself discouraged and either give up on the mission completely, waste hours searching and then accepting what I found in the very beginning, or get distracted and end up wasting more time and effort then I originally intended.

It would be awesome if I there all the media in the world: movies, pictures, web pages, etc could be available to users all over the web for free! It sounds crazy, but I don't understand why not. Imagine the work we could produce if we were able to see the full picture. We would be wiser, faster, and better informed of the world around us. If anything, Web 2.0 has taught us that when we share, we learn and we grow in only positive directions. Many worry about copyright infringement but I believe that a CC license will soon come/should be put on all forms of media.

The idea reminds me of a larger, more refined version of Google that makes information easy for all users. I think we're getting close to this stage but I fear our pride and our greed will inhibit us from every sniffing this brain crack.

Brain Crack #3 ~ Origami/Lego dispenser

Official Start Time: 3:00 a.m.
Date; 3/28/09
Official End Time: 3:30 a.m.

A few blog post ago, I talked about Origami and how when I was in middle school I used to do it all the time. Like in class, late at night, etc etc.

Being the creative, OCD, obsessive child I am, I got the crazy idea of a giant dispenser that would give you origami paper. I always seemed to run out of origami paper and when I got this ideas it was basically a giant origami paper dispenser that had a ready supply of origami paper of every kind.

The idea didn't really stop there as you can imagine I also shared a love for legos and a bunch of other stuff. The concept is still the same in which I would have a ready supply of legos whenever I needed it. The Lego one actually sounds better and better when I think about as I remember always running out of certain pieces and having to give up on that idea. (Don't be surprised if in the future you see me in Lego Land running around building stuff and stealing pieces)

In general, having a ready supply of anything would be pretty sweet but as a kid these were my biggest concerns. I wonder what other ideas I could come up with?

Brain Crack #2 ~ Snow Be Gone Blowtorch

Official Start Time: 3:00 a.m.
Date: 3/27/09
Official End Time: 3:30 a.m.

Now I know the title might seem a little bizarre but I was like 7 years old when the idea came to mind and I think it might have been a good idea at the time.

So, in my hometown of Waterbury, CT we are often plagued with snow. A snow storm for us is like a hurricane for Florida; everyone starts acting crazy as they expect the worse buying as much food and supplies as possible.

Waiting for the school bus is probably the biggest pain when after it snows. It's freezing, slippery and just uncomfortable all together. An idea, at the moment hit me as I wondered how people could get ride of the snow in a jiffy. The idea was simple, a consumer blowtorch used simply for eliminating the snow.

Think about it, we lose school because of snow. People get into accidents because of snow. Snow doesn't help commuters in any way, but instead makes their life that much worse. A Snow be Gone blowtorch would melt the snow and make life easier for people. Sanitation workers could be equipped with tools like these and could make rounds around town to insure that there wasn't any snow in people's way the next day.

I think it's a good idea, but there are many details that I know consider might prevent the creation of such a tool.
  • It would scorch the ground!
  • It just isn't natural
  • It doesn't sound very safe
  • It isn't energy efficient
I guess there are still a few bugs to work out, but I believe tackling these issues means tackling some of the fundamental elements of society and the way we live; I don't know if have the answers to some of those dilemmas yet.

Sincerely, Hector Guzman

Brain Crack #1 ~ Corner Store Infrastructure

Official Start Time: 2:30 a.m.
Date: 3/26/09
Official End Time: 3:00 a.m.

So my cousin works at a corner store and it can get pretty hectic between the people trying to steal stuff and the number of people trying to be served in such a small period of time.

The biggest thing is probably getting the beer. Like any "legal establishment" it's illegal to sell bear in Connecticut after 9:00 p.m. However, this isn't a Supermarket, but a Corner Store where business literally thrives off the malignant deeds of others. So basically after 9:00 p.m. you can imagine the traffic Corner Stores have and all the other crazy, illegal crap that goes on.

In between all the chaos, brain crack struck me, and I though how great would it be if there was an infrastructure behind a Corner Store. It doesn't even need to stop at a Corner Store, it could be applied to stores everywhere and what not. The idea is basically a computer database that keeps a precise archive of all the supplies in the store, their price, etc etc. The clerk would simply tell the computer what supplies he/she needs and he/she would never have to leave their post or send someone after things that consume time and put the workers and the establishment at risk by law.

The ideas seems nice but I guess it would take away the aesthetic taste of going to the store. Plus I would imagine there would be a be a zero tolerance policy when employees breaks the rule no matter how small the issue might be. I guess it was good while it lasted.

Sincerely, Hector Guzman

Brain Crack is an idea I saw in a recent video which struck me as a well duh, I do that all the time and it might be smart to share those thoughts.

So if you aren't totally confused, brain crack is basically random ideas you get every now and again that you think would be awesome if they existed in real life. Random thoughts and ideas you wish were true because it would either be amazng or just helpful for your everyday life.

Over the next couple of blogs, I will be sharing some of my brain crack and I hope ya'll share some of yours.
